Major milestone with first pre cast unit laid
A huge achievement for the Southsea Coastal Scheme today with the laying of the first pre-cast concrete and limestone wall unit at Long Curtain Moat. This is the beginning of a mammoth task installing around 80 of these units, weighing in at 10 tonnes each! A 220 tonne crane has been deployed to site to lift the units into place.
The Purbeck limestone will be used for the wall cladding west of Spur Redoubt, while 114 granite units weighing in at 12 tonnes each will be used for the apron.
Approval from Historic England for the materials to be used came after more than a year of consultation and testing to ensure the new design was sympathetic to the historic area.
